I hated walking home from work but at this hour it was either walk or trust the taxi service. So, walking it was. I had been working at the Happy House for about a month now, slinging Asian food buffet style. Not my ideal job but it kept the lights on at home. So I trudged back and forth to work every day, six days a week, for 10 hours a day. I was beat. I could imagine myself home, kicking off my shoes, peeling off my sweaty socks, sliding into my comfy pajamas and falling onto the sofa to watch late night reruns of I Love Lucy while I ate whatever leftovers there were. I'd call my mom's cell and leave her a voice mail to let her know I was home, like I did every night I worked late. Same old same old. I paused at an intersection while I waited for the crossing light to turn. I spotted myself in a shop window and grimaced. I looked like hell. My hair, which had been in a neat bun at the start of shift was now all frayed and falling apart. I was lucky enough to not like makeup so I didn't have to worry about it being smudged o anything. A green walking guy.. My turn to cross the street.
I walked for three or four more blocks before I could hear the sound of grunting. A fighting kind of grunting. I sighed, not really wanting to get involved. But there was this stupid sense of duty, or was it curiosity, that caused me to investigate. A rounded the corner and found myself in the mouth of an alley. Just lovely. There, a few feet from me was a lone female surrounded by seven or so guys. Ugly guys too. I pulled a face. One of them spotted me Crap." I muttered when he started toward me.
"Oh no, not tonight. It's been a rough night for me already, I don't need you making it worse." I sighed and threw my purse at him. He knocked it away like it was a bug. I saw the girl land a really good blow to one of them, shoving something she had in her hand into his chest. He disintegrated into dust. "Vampire?" I asked the guy walking toward me. He smiled evilly. "Right." I said with determination. "Alright. Let's do this. I got TV to watch."
I waited until he got close enough before I snapped my fingers and summoned fire into my hand. Confused the vampire stopped. "Buh bye." I said as I threw the flames at him. He screamed as he burned until *poof* he, too was dust.
I dashed forward, suddenly not tired anymore. Maybe finally getting to use my magick gave me a second wind. I fended off a punch from another vampire until I stood close enough to the other girl to speak to her. "Nice night." I said coyly. Do this often?" I asked as I kicked a vampire in his junk, causing him to fall to his knees in pain.
