History: Harley Hughes was born in a hospital in L.A. Her birth mother left her in the hospital and disappeared. Harley’s father did not surface. A nurse, Holly Hughes, at the hospital could not bare her own children and adopted Harley. Holly was a single woman in a one bedroom apartment trying to get by the best she could. Harley watched her adopted mother struggle through hard times and come out on top. This gave Harley quite the role model.
Growing up in L.A. made Harley feel like she had to make something of herself. She had to stand out from the crowd. She was obsessed with female artists like Gwen Stefani and Annie Lennox. Harley sang and wrote every chance she got, constantly listening to her inspirations. School was not a priority to Harley, but her mother forced her to do homework and projects throughout the years. Without trying too hard, Harley found school was easy for her to get through and still be able to party and write.
For her sixteenth birthday, Holly bought Harley tickets to see her teen idol. When they were trying to get into the concert the two were separated outside the venue. Harley was pushed into a dark abandoned alley. The energetic teenager started to panic quickly. A dark figure pulled Harley deeper into the darkness. She felt breathing on her neck and her heart continued to race. Her eyes closed tightly and as Harley imagined her end, her body hit the cold, cracked cement. A man with a long leather jacket growled at her to run.
Harley did not look back. She went back to her house and waited for her mom to arrive. But her Holly never came home. Destroyed and broken, Harley packed up a small backpack and abandoned her life. She told herself to start over and live her life to the fullest. Harley never had a chance to find closure with her mother, but has always made sure to keep Holly’s cross close to her heart.
L.A. had changed into a wild city, different from how she saw it with her mother. The streets were unforgiving. Harley found herself at a local shelter for troubled teens for a little while, but that ended quickly when she had to throw up barricades to keep bewildered cops from tearing everyone inside apart. From there Harley traveled across the states, looking for a perfect fit. Las Vegas, too corrupt. Denver, too boring. Kansas City, not enough sparkle. Chicago, too windy.
Around her eighteenth birthday, Harley found herself in Cleveland, Ohio. The downtown area hooked her in and she felt a connection. Unfortunately, the city felt the same way about Harley. She found a job at a local open mic lounge as a food server. After a few months, something changed within her. She felt a surge go through her and an uncertain strength powered through her veins. Ever since then Harley couldn’t go a few weeks without finding trouble. She could not understand what had happened.
A few years later, Harley became a bartender at the lounge and tried to keep her focus on her singing career. Devoting her life to the fullest was turning into a more difficult task, but it did not stop her from trying. Any chance she got, she would sing, dance, and drink. Cleveland was her home and Harley did not want anything else to change.
