Chaos and disorder ran rampant through the small town of Sunnydale, California. That is, until the Slayer arrived. During the Seven years Buffy the Vampire Slayer was aired, we have watched our favorite characters fight, runaway, die, come back to life, and deal with the usual problems of living. It all ended with Sunnydale's destruction. The last thing we see is Buffy Summers, Vampire Slayer, smiling. We can all picture what she is thinking... "It's over, it's finally over." Deep in her heart of hearts she knew the relief and happiness was only temporary. All Slayers know the truth. It's part of their abilities. Next to their Slayer strength, combat moves, and senses, they all know the truth... It's never over.

(OOC just gonna use my RP sample here to get things started :P)

"Is it just me or is this the greatest crowd we've had in eons!" Lorne said addressing the audience at large, holding his glass up to them casually. He just finished his rendition of "Always and Forever". The audience clapped, with enthusiasm...at least as much enthusiasm a bunch of demons and vamps can muster. He laughed a bit, happy with their response. "I'm feeling like Sally Field at the Oscars, minus the hysterically crying detail. But you never know, if the night keeps going like this and a few more of these," he said referring to his drink. "...all of you bundles-of-joy might get a spectacle out of me," He laughed.

"One more song!" Lorne heard from a rough, non-human voice in the crowd. He knew it was. It was Franklin, the regular attender, a demon with two small trunks for a nose and horrible hygiene. Not that he could blame the guy who practically lives in sewers.

"Easy there, my slime covered friend, hold your horses...then tie them up to something solid, because the last thing I want to do is hog the mike. Especially since I've got my friend Marshall here--he's about to give us a stunning performance of 'I Will Survive'." The vampire with short brown hair meekly came up on stage, his eyes shifty and nervous.

Lorne handed the mike to him and patted him on the back. "Give 'em hell," He paused. "...just not literally, mi amigo." He winked and exited the stage, straightening his teal suit jacket as the music started. He walked over to the bar and taking a seat so he could finish his drink and watch Marshall.

"Yeesh," Lorne said and took another sip of his drink when he heard the first bars of the classic disco song come from Marshall's mouth. "No wonder he's so shy. Even his aura has TMI." He shook his head. Nights like these in L.A was what Lorne lived for. The crowd out there was liking the show, people weren't shy to sing their hearts out, there was simply nothing like it. And it was always interesting to see who would walk in that front door.

...as long as it wasn't a friend of Angel's coming to make Caritas into dynamite central that is.

((OOC: I'm just plugging in that she at least knows who Lorne is because they must have met sometime between the series/comics and it just makes things a bit easier^_^, let me know if you would rather have me change this))

Gwen was glad to see that Lorne had Caritas up and running again. The place had a reputation larger than her own, perhaps even Angel's. But she had never been inside. At first it was the fact that she was not the karaoke kind of girl and then it had been shut down, and then it had been blown up. Since then she had reconsidered her interest in the place. Not the singing part, but the drinking there part. She wasn't sure what she expected to find there, she wasn't looking for a reading, but she was interested to see how the process worked. Gwen knew what an empath demon did, but Lorne had a flair anyhow, and to put that together with a karaoke bar. There probably wasn't a better match around.

She slipped into the bar just as Lorne was finishing his song, and getting requests for more. She was never quite sure what he would love more, singing or reading. Tonight he chose to read. It made sense, that was the reason this place was as popular as it was. Not to mention the whole no violence thing, though the spell or whatever it was had suffered some serious blows to it's integrity from what she had heard. Gwen ordered herself a drink and settled down for the show.

Or maybe not. This guy seemed uncomfortable, and wasn't easy on the ears. She glanced around seeing that people were really enjoying the show, and the prospect of making fools out of themselves. She would never really understand the allure of that, but she had no problem with partaking in the spectator part of the sport. After a verse and half a course, she noticed Lorne sitting nearby. She moved herself over a few seats, and turned her attention to him. "Let me guess" she said with a smile and a nod at "Marshall" " "trouble with the lady vampires?"

Lorne

Once Lorne got over his reading of Marshall, he actually started to enjoy the show. Sure the vampire had a hard time keeping rhythm but Lorne had to give him points for giving it his all. He was nervously moving around as he tried to hit those passionate notes.

"...I will survive, I will survive, hey hey!" Marshall belted.

The crowd was loving it as the vampire showed off the best he could with a little hesitant dance number during the instrumental break. He put his drink down and clapped enthusiastically with the crowd. That was when he heard a voice next to him asking him what he sensed. He leaned a bit towards her with an eye still on the stage and said. "Well, between you and me, its more like trouble with his stomach. He tends to want to eat the flesh of his lady friends instead of the standard drink of blood. He's worried it might make him out of wack."

He grimaced again and shivered dramatically before grabbing his drink again. "Give some vampires an inch, they take a mile and a few quarters." Before taking a sip, he finally caught a look at who was sitting next to him.

"Well hello, Ms. Energizer Bunny!" He greeted, turning to her. "What brings you to the new and improved Caritas, sweetheart? Want to try out those singing chops? I have a feeling you'll knock everyone out of the ball park." Nothing particular was coming from her aura. But there tended to be a trend when it comes to Angel's friends and friends of friends. It consisted of being or harboring bad news. Either way, Gwen was bound to follow suit.

Gwen grimaced, at the thought of that. Not a pretty image for the mind. "Well" she said with a light sigh, "I was half right." She smiled at Lorne. She had always liked him. It seemed like despite the darker parts of the world they both happened to be stuck in, he managed to find some good. It was refreshing. No wonder Caritas was always packed. Nothing like a good song and a show to get the mind out of wherever else it happened to be. Though she had came here for the mild entertainment, she soon found herself almost engrossed by the whole thing, though part of that had to do with the flesh eating no doubt.

Gwen's eyebrows shot up and she very nearly lost her drink when he expected her to be here for the singing. Well, she was, but not for herself to be doing any singing...at all. "oh no. Not even a little. Energizer bunny has the little drum, remember?" She paused for a moment, "not that I'm looking to play the drums either." Gwen laughed slightly. She had never been afraid to stand out, nor to call attention to herself in doing so, but singing? She had never tried, but had that feeling that she really didn't want to. So she kept her mouth shut in that respect. "Nope." she continued, much less frantic, "just came to watch the show and enjoy some non violent fun. Why getting some funky vibes? Or are you hoping I'll go Angel on you and bring some Manilow to the table?" Gwen grinned, she wasn't supposed to know that. But in her brief relationship with Connor, she had learned some things that she was keeping for just the right time, like friendly blackmail, or entertainment. She smiled thinking of him, poor guy. She hadn't spent long with him, and she knew it was pretty much more for convenience than anything else, but she still felt a twinge of sadness thinking about it.

Lorne

Lorne couldn't lie and say he wasn't anxious for Gwen to sing a few bars. He'd heard bits and pieces of Gwen's past from the Angel gang, one little piece of tidbit including stopping Gunn's heart and going Catwoman on several valuable items. So yes, he was very much interested in what Gwen was up to these days. Lorne sensed that she was a sweet woman underneath the edgy clothing, particularly the leather she tended to wear. She just needed some direction. He, of course, did not know if he'd be able to give that to her, or if she already found that direction.

Hm. One thing was for sure. He'll never know if she didn't get over that itty bitty bashfulness problem. Lorne didn't understand why people were so shy just because they didn't sound like Whitney. As long as they had some heart and soul...well, granted, many literally had neither. But it was the principle of the thing.

"Oh, don't play with my emotions honey," Lorne said with a grin after her Energizer Bunny comment. "There's nothing like a woman who can find her way around a drum set. You see that guy over there?" He pointed his glass and a finger at the far end of the place, sitting at the chair. He was fairly human like, an average looking fellow, . "That love sick puppy has a weird thing for women who can play instruments. Anyone who attempts to go Sheryl Crow on that stage, he makes his move. But poor thing gets rejected every time. Want to know why? He asks 'what is your number' and his follow up question ends up being 'can you be my musical slave before I use you as a religious sacrifice?'. Not a good way to pick up the ladies."

He smiled and shook his head and put his glass to his lips. He paused. "Er...that didn't make you feel any better about singing did it? Stop me while I'm ahead next time," He took a swallow, enjoying the taste of the alcohol.

"Oh I'm always getting funky vibes, sweetie--" He paused when he heard the opening bars of "I Feel Good" by James Brown. He looked up on stage and saw Leroy, the Akelpt Demon with the sagging skin, working his soulful strut. "...especially when I'm hearing the Godfather of Soul...Leroy! You're fabulous!" He raised his glass to the stage. He turned to Gwen. "I swear, if I didn't know any better, I'd say he's getting possessed by the ghost of Mr. brown himself," Clearly enjoying the song, he took another swallow of his drink.

"By the way, there's always room for more Manilow. There is no room, however, for arch enemies destroying my little sanctuary. But don't worry, me and Angelcakes came to an agreement. As long as I don't get pulled into any apocalyptic battles, I'm peachy." He admired Angel's work and what he tried doing over at Wolfram & Hart, but Lorne had had enough of that. He would do his part, play his role, with a microphone and the stage. He was not made for the epic battles, it was why he want to leave Pylea in the first place.

"So tell me, whats happening on Gwen's side of the tracks?" He turned around towards the bar and raised his hand to catch the attention of the bartender. "Yeah, one for the fiery brunette over here." He told him. He smiled at Gwen. "On me."

Gwen laughed at she heard the continued revelations into customers. She couldn't imagine throwing all that out on the line with a song. She wasn't one to be super expressive anyways, but throwing in the performing for an empath demon is one of the many reason's her singing career was over before it had even had a chance to begin. "Got it" she said through a laugh "no energizer drum for him" She winced slightly after that, really glad she wasn't singing, but even more glad that she hadn't taken up an instrument in place of a voice. She would be half way to sacrifice land by now.

As the act ended and she heard the familiar James Brown tune open, she found herself being less surprised at each act, and relaxing more into a general state of enjoyment. She had gotten here trouble free and wouldn't ave to worry about that again until she made her way home. But that would be quite a ways off the way things were going now.

She sighed and rolled her eyes at the familiar association of Angel, destruction and apocalypse. Gwen swallowed the last of her drink before speaking again. "Sounds like a solid plan...but wasn't that the plan last time too." She paused again. "Well at least he's busy with things other than us for now" Gwen offered raising her new drink."Thanks" she added onto her mini-toast with a gesture to her drink. No wonder she had always like Lorne. Aside from the fact that they shared a flashy sense of style, he also appreciated the non-hellbent-on-destroying-W&H parts of life. She was glad to see that they were both getting back to what they loved to do. She had exciting new crime, and he had his bar back.

"Well..." Despite her recent adventures she was mostly feeling very unadventurous tonight. "Shaking off the whole dead thing. That was quite a drag. And spent some time out of LA...though I for some reason came back...must be the ghost of James over there...." she said with another laugh. "And I'm sure you're loving the post entertainment division life."

Gwen took another drink, and let her attention wander to the next singer. Another vampire, who had a thing for the Beatles. She smiled to herself as the opening notes of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer played." She knew the song well before, though the thought of a vampire singing it was just funnier than the song itself...which probably shouldn't have been as funny as it was to her. She found herself getting a little bit drunk and loosening up. "bang, bang Maxwell's silver hammer..." she began to sing along ever so quietly before remembering just who she was sitting with. Gwen hated the idea of anyone hearing her sing anyhow, but she had also given Lorne a nice look inside her mind. "Excellent" she mumbled to herself, before quickly swallowing the rest of her drink. Maybe she could forget the rest of tonight.

Lorne nodded, still somewhat paying attention to the stage. Being dead and coming back wasn't a strange occurrence to Lorne, and he didn't even bat an eye when she said it. "L.A. will do that to you. You think you've had enough, decide to take a break from all the chaos, but then the city reaches out its long, and extremely polluted hand and pulls you right back in. It's like an annoying uncle that just won't go away." He knew how that felt like...the coming back to LA thing, not the uncle thing. He had a short lapse of judgment trying to start a show in Vegas, to end up a singing and dancing slave for a casino. Yes, LA was much more appealing.

When Gwen mentioned his days at the entertainment division he chuckled a bit. "Better believe it, pumpkin. I love glitz and glam, but give me a simple microphone and a stage any day. I prefer doing what I love to do without out the signing-my-soul-to-the-devil fine print. But did I stress I love glitz and glam?"

Then Malcolm the vampire came on stage with his selection of The Beatles. He beamed. "Good ol' Malcolm, always gracing us with his renditions of the classics. Don't you just love--" He heard Gwen singing along and he paused, his expression dropped as he was met with Gwen's aura. He turned around fully to her. "Well, looks like Ms. Electricity has some pipes after all. Also looks like she has a bit of trouble coming to terms with things." His expression turned serious. "Either way, sweetie, I know you probably don't want to hear this, but there's a whole lot of rocks ahead...and by rocks, I mean boulders. And you won't get anywhere if you don't do what you need to do," His red eyes gazed into hers. "And you know what you need to do."

Gwen sighed. Right now alcohol was both her best friend and worst enemy. She wouldn't have sang ANYTHING if she hadn't had at least one or two in her. But now she was going to make herself forget about the singing. It was rather mortifying, and she could feel her face turning about as red as her leather top. She NEVER sang in public. She almost never sang at home, just in case someone would com in. Not that she ever had guests, but she didn't even like the thought of some demon or thief or whatever to hear her. Preserving her dignity was the one thing she really wanted to do. But that was out the window now. Well, at least I can get some insight now... She tried to rationalize it out in her mind. While most of what she said was true, she was interested to hear what Lorne would have to say about her, she wasn't willing to sacrifice what she just had.

There were some issues there, but she wasn't sure which one he was talking about. Was it the dead thing? That seemed pretty common around here, but it still bothered her. Or was it her new A99 gig? She was always in trouble, but these boulder like rocks she was going to be facing had many possibilities here. Hopefully they could just be her own. She had gotten away from the do-gooders of Angel Investigations and into something that fit her much better. But she hoped that this could be her own. She could get as involved as she wanted with any sort f group or cause. She really didn't need other people getting involved with her, in the personal sense right now. Last time that had happened death was the result....or maybe it was something to do with her electrical state of being....

And so her mind had come full circle. Really, she just had a lot going on, so Lorne could really take his pick. She would just go with whatever by now. She was half wanting to figure some of it all out and half just get this the hell over with. Though she knew she was done singing. One line would have to be enough for him. She had a strong feeling it was. Because there were boulders, so for her at lest, it was enough.

"I think the pipes have a whole lot of rust on them" Gwen sighed, and swallowed another drink. "So there are a lot of things that could mean...I've been an busy girl. Any ideas on the specifics?"

Maybe if she could figure out what exactly he was getting from her she could put the rest to the back of her mind, and therefore away from Lornes mind...hopefully. She just needed to know what it was that he knew, so that she could keep him from knowing anymore. No wonder she never sang any karaoke. It was a complicated thing for everyone. She wondered just how anyone could have fun with this no matter what appearances showed.

Lorne took a swallow of his own drink, hearing the unnaturally deep voice of Malcolm in the background. Gwen's disapproval of Lorne reading her did not go unnoticed, and he tended to get that a lot. The truth, unfortunately hurt. But it wasn't his job to make them accept that truth. He just wanted to lay it out there for them. Set them on their paths. Following it...well that was up to them.

"Listen sweetie, that's precisely the point. You've got road blocks coming in at all sides and now you're at a stand still. Why? Because you're scared. And you don't want to deal with them. But honey you've got to realize, as frequent as it may seem, coming back from the dead isn't like the toys that come from the bottom of cereal boxes. There's a reason. And believe it or not, avoiding people and doing the lone ranger gig is not a good way to keep that gift you call resurrection."

The bar erupted in claps, hoots and hollers for Malcolm and Lorne glanced at the stage again. Evelenda, a demon was up next, singing a Donna Summers song, "Bad Girls". Boy she wasn't lying. Evelenda was certainly a bad one.

He turned to Gwen again. "Bottom line, point, whatever...is this jumbled pot of mess I'm seeing in your aura, if it's not dealt with...your second chance might be cut short."

Gwen saw the small flash of disappointment on Lorne's face. It was true, not many people liked it when someone else got inside their head. Gwen could barely fit her own mind in there, and to be able to have a bunch of other people's stuff in your mind couldn't really be the best thing in the world. She felt bad, but not that bad. If only she hadn't started singing. But it was too late for that now. She would have to get over herself and deal with it. Because what he was saying she knew was true. As much as she didn't want to admit it, and as much as she hadn't thought about the other thing as a possibility, Lorne was right. How could he not be? Yet in all this revelation she still kept thinking "stupid song, making me sing." in her head.

With a sight, Gwen swiveled her stool away from the stage and leaned into the bar. This was really not how tonight was supposed to go. But now that things were going this way she was going to have to deal with it. But relying on other people was not really what she did, at all. Help was one thing, but she had never actually needed anyone outside of a job. What did it really matter if her presence was know to everyone or not. It's not like she had a big mystical connection to them. Gwen had always just seen everyone as a temporary thing. She flitted in and out of groups and situations, but always ended up alone again. It was the way she had always been and the way she liked it.

But still she had been spending a lot of time trying to avoid everyone. She figured it would be easier to just get on with her life, part 2, than to go back and risk getting entangled again. That was more than she had ever wanted or bargained for. If this was just like anything else she should be just fine. Move on and get over it. She was always good at that before. What was it that was so different about it now? If this was some resurrection thing she was going to be really pissed off. It wasn't really like it was even her decision. Sure, being alive was almost always a nice way to be...but she had made her decision when she went off to fight the dragon.

Gwen sighed and turned to face Lorne. "I'm gonna have to go back and see them aren't I?" she half groaned, half laughed. This was getting to be a bit ridiculous....

Lorne

Lorne took a swallow of his drink as she pondered what he said. Finally she uttered the magic words.

“On the money, honey.” He told her. “Fortunately, I can stay away from the big huncho vamp in the black coat…for the most part. But you can’t. See, you holding on to your little secret of being alive is going to eat at you, until finally it’s going to come back begging for attention…a little like Britney Spears almost.”

He took another swallow and continued, sympathetically, “See, I can only set you on your path, sweetie. Whether you take it is up to you. But all this I’m getting from your aura can’t end up towards anything good. You and I both know that. So the question is…whaaat’s goin’ on? Teeell me what’s goin’ on?” he sung the lyric from Marvin Gaye lightly, cracking a smile. “What are you thinking, sweetie?” He lifted a finger for the bartender to bring another round of drinks.

As the new round of drinks came, she stopped drinking long enough to actually think about what she was going to say next. "Well..." Gwen wasn't entirely sure how to say this, but she was sure as hell drunk enough to try...which she was sad to say was not as much as she would have like. "Mostly I think it sucks. I spent all that time trying to avoid them, and then helping them, and then getting rid of them...it's just way to much. I don't want to go back to the white hat side of it all. I like this grayish area..."

Gwen let her thoughts trail off, and circled a finger around the rim of her glass. She really didn't get it. In dying, coming back, and getting out of the whole Angel Investigations circle, she had gotten exactly what she wanted. So why was it she had to go back? She knew Lorne's abilities wouldn't really be able to answer any of the many questions she had, but it was so tempting to try. If he could see things from her that she couldn't even see herself, it would seem that he should know the ins and outs of the situation. But that would be too omnipotent. In the end everyone can only have so much power before they got too powerful, and corrupted and dark. Wolfram and Hart, and then some witch she had heard about in Sunnydale who had gone all dark with too much power and a lot of rage. There was no way to know that much about someone and not get a bit mad with power. Or very socially reclusive. he had never thought about the real consequences of being in someones head, but it couldn't be all roses and candy.

Gwen swallowed some of her drink, before deciding it was time. "I don't see you going back." she almost dared Lorne to make her stop.
